Headshot Rescue – Seagle Colony 2008

In 2008, I had the opportunity to speak to the Seagle Colony Young Artists about the importance of great photography in their careers. My main points were:

A headshot is often one of the first impressions you make
A headshot should look like the artist it is there to representA headshot should show your personality without losing it’s professional quality
Chose a headshot photographer YOU are comfortable with (if you are not comfortable during the session, it will show in your photos)
Chose a photographer who has a style you feel is similar to your own (while photographers can capture many different looks, if you are a classic/old-style person and you choose a high fashion/edgy photographer, there will be disconnect
Do not have your friend with a good camera take your shots. When side by side in a program, it will be obvious who had the pride in their work to pay for their photography.

Carla Dirlikov

Carla is fast becoming known all over the world for her portrayal of the title character in Bizet’s Carmen. This past January, Carla approached me to do publicity photos for an upcoming production of Carmen. She was going to be singing with the Sinfonica de Yucatan (Mexico). She had been asked to do a publicity shoot in Mexico during the height of the opera audition season. The company worked it out for her to stay in the US until the time of the show by having the photos shot here in NYC by me.

The poster came out beautifully:

But, I have to say, I personally enjoyed seeing the billboard!

Don’t think of a photo shoot as something to dread. My clients and I have always had a GREAT time during a shoot. In my opinion, it is one of the things that makes a good headshot. If you are not enjoying yourself, you will not look happy, and if you don’t look happy…there’s nothing that can be done in the editing stage to fix the image.

Wes Mason

I met Wes while working for the Toledo Opera. Wes was studying at the University of Michigan at the time, and that was just up the road from me. So, while making a visit to see his teacher (and my singing mentor), Steve Lusmann, I met Wes through mutual friends.

I ran into him again at the Seagle Music Colony the following summer, when I was visiting the Colony to discuss choosing a headshot photographer and what makes a good headshot.

Wes has been quickly moving up the ladder in the opera world. In addition to his great gigs, he has been mentioned on the popular opera blog Opera Chic, and his head shot (left) was called yummy!

William Burden

I met Bill when I was an Apprentice Artist with the Santa Fe Opera. Bill was a Principal Artist and was singing the role of Benedict in the Berlioz opera Beatrice and Benedict, which was based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

Bill is a wonderful colleague, and is a great singing actor. We kept in touch over the years by running into each other at our mutual voice teacher’s studio. When the time came for new headshots and publicity photos, Bill called me. I was very flattered. He was a great subject too!

Darlene McCullough

Darlene is a true Renaissance woman. She is an actress and wonderful writer, and seems to always have her hands in a project or four! (That’s right, not just two…so, I guess she needs an extra pair of hands!)

Eve Gigliotti

Eve Gigliotti was a great early client in my early days. She was willing to try anything to get a good picture. She also liked a little edgier photograph than some opera singers.
